Well, I'm on the train and we've barely left the station when we come to a stop in the middle of a tunnel right before the tracks cross over 66th street. Then the conductor comes on the PA system, saying that there's a fire on the LRT train and we need to evacuate and walk towards the road.
All of a sudden, everything jumps out of its normal spectrum of occurrences.
So we all get off the train and walk up to 66th street, where we find out that there's an electrical fire on the last car in the train. After some waiting and talking to other passengers (and some people from news stations, who get there surprisingly quickly), I form the opinion that the fact that Edmonton Transit System is still using the 30+ year-old cars that were released when the original stretch of LRT system was opened is faintly ridiculous.
Seriously, half the LRT fleet is more than 30 years old. I'm not even surprised that there was an electrical fire, really. I'm glad nobody got hurt, but I definitely think that the City of Edmonton should replace ALL of the old cars. They go across the city from Clareview to Century Park goodness only knows how many times a day. And it would seem that the electrical system in the old trains is a bit outdated (along with a definite lack of fire extinguishers on board...). So yeah, it's about time.
Gotta say, though, it's probably the most interesting thing that's happened to me in the better part of a month. I was an hour late for work this morning, but not a huge deal.
That being said, I'm on an LRT on my way home right now. Yes, it is one of the older cars. And yes, I -am- a bit nervous.
*sigh* oh well.
